Prompt-to-design helps, but not evenly

A randomized experiment with product designers and managers found shorter task completion times when participants had access to Figma Make, with benefits varying by role and task.

โ‰ˆ20%

The study reports approximately 20% shorter completion times among participants who completed the tasks with Figma Make access.

The Story

This study is a welcome counterweight to sweeping claims about AI replacing design. In a controlled setting, prompt-to-design reduced completion time, with larger gains for product managers than professional designers.

That suggests a more precise studio question: which parts of the process benefit from acceleration, and which parts still depend on taste, domain knowledge, critique and responsibility?

Use AI to widen the number of directions you can test, not to outsource the decision about what deserves to exist. The speed is useful; the selection remains the craft.
