Prompting is only the beginning of visual experimentation
Figma’s new generative plugins and shaders move AI-assisted making closer to a programmable visual medium.
The interesting shift is from generating images to generating reusable instruments.
The Story
Figma describes new generative plugins and shaders that can create motion, interactivity, code, and editable controls directly on the canvas. Designers can also publish tools privately or to the wider Figma Community. ([figma.com](https://www.figma.com/blog/how-we-built-generative-plugins-and-shaders/))
That changes the creative question. Instead of asking an AI tool for a finished look, you can ask it for a small system that produces a family of related looks—then tune the behaviour, limits, and rhythm yourself.
For a multidisciplinary studio, this is a promising direction for bespoke visual identities: build a responsive texture, type, motion, or image-making instrument rather than handing clients a static asset library.
