Higher-ed brands are experienced as environments, not campaigns
A new study examines how digital branding in UK higher education shapes student engagement through lived, everyday experiences rather than polished institutional messaging alone.
Staged institutions, lived experiences
The paper’s framing is useful: students encounter an institution through a sequence of digital moments, not one controlled brand message.
The Story
For universities, a visual identity is only one layer of the experience. Students meet the institution through search results, course pages, social content, portals, emails, maps, forms, and the tone of small interactions.
That makes consistency more nuanced than repeating the same logo and colour palette. The system has to make the institution feel coherent while still allowing different faculties, communities, and student stories to feel real.
The opportunity for a creative studio is to design the connective tissue: patterns for proof, guidance, belonging, and reassurance across the whole journey—not just a recruitment campaign. ([open-access.bcu.ac.uk](https://www.open-access.bcu.ac.uk/17196/?utm_source=openai))
