A mature identity learns how to play again
The Poetry Foundation’s refreshed identity loosens its earlier restraint with a more expressive Pegasus, broader colour and bolder typography.
Evolution can mean giving a serious brand more room to breathe.
The Story
The Poetry Foundation’s new identity is a thoughtful example of renewal without amnesia. Pentagram’s earlier work remains part of the institution’s history, but the new system introduces more colour, movement and play for a wider cultural moment.
For creative directors, the useful question is not “How do we make this look younger?” It is “What emotional range has the organisation earned the right to express now?” A mature brand can often become more expressive because its core meaning is already understood.
This is also a good reminder to revisit old systems as living things. A visual identity does not need to be discarded because its context has changed; sometimes it needs new tempo, new proportions and permission to move. The best refreshes change the system’s emotional range, not just its surface.
