Stop Treating Instagram Like A Portfolio

Why this matters to Wen: social posting is not the same thing as being findable. Portfolio structure, outreach, and community still do the heavier lifting.

Workflow cue: the article argues for portfolio clarity, intentional outreach, and creative community over passive posting.

The Story

This week’s It’s Nice That advice column contains one of the most useful anti-delusions in creative self-promotion: Instagram is often not where art directors are actually looking for talent. The recommendation is much more grounded. Build searchable portfolio projects, state your availability and rates, do focused outreach, and stay active in a real community.

That sounds obvious until you notice how much creative energy still gets poured into hoping the algorithm will notice. The better line in the piece is about specificity. If someone is searching for a '2D vector illustrator working with pet brands', they need signals strong enough to find that exact person. Broad self-branding is comforting. It is not especially searchable.

Wen’s version of this is not illustration, but the lesson transfers perfectly. If Studio Wensday wants to attract the right audience, the work should be described in concrete language: design systems for thoughtful brands, calmer content worlds, higher-ed marketing with more feeling, AI workflow guidance for creatives. Precision is how the right people recognise themselves in your offer.

Studio Wensday Angle

Rewrite your bios and portfolio intros with explicit search language. Skip the poetic throat-clearing. Name the audience, the medium, and the outcome. Then pair that with one targeted outreach rhythm each week instead of relying on ambient posting.
