A university brand can make uncertainty its subject

RMIT’s “What the future?!” campaign won Marketing Campaign of the Year at the 2026 PIEoneer Awards by treating an uncertain future as an honest creative premise.

We didn’t want to simply tell people that RMIT prepares them for the future.

The campaign instead framed uncertainty as a reason to build confidence, practical skills, and curiosity.

The Story

RMIT’s award-winning campaign avoids the familiar higher-ed promise that a university can neatly prepare anyone for an unknowable future. Its stronger proposition is emotional and practical: students can become more capable of meeting uncertainty.

That is a useful brand strategy lesson beyond education. When a category is full of confident claims, acknowledging the real tension in the audience’s life can create more credibility than adding another layer of optimism.

Studio Wensday takeaway: start positioning work by naming the fear or contradiction your audience already feels. A distinctive visual system often follows from a distinctive truth. ([rmit.edu.au](https://www.rmit.edu.au/news/all-news/2026/sep/pieoneer-award?utm_source=openai))

The most persuasive optimism usually begins with an honest account of uncertainty.
