A brand refresh built for life beyond the homepage

Gusto explains how its new identity system reflects a broader product ecosystem and the messy, distributed way small businesses actually work.

Gusto’s refresh treats the brand as a companion across many working contexts, not just a polished marketing surface.

The Story

Gusto’s refresh is a useful reminder that identity systems need to describe behaviour, not only appearance. The company connects the brand to payroll, benefits, finance, messaging, and AI-assisted work—places where the experience is practical, fragmented, and often happening between other tasks.

The strategic idea is warmth with utility. A brand can be friendly without becoming soft, and expansive without losing its centre, if the identity has enough repeatable behaviours to travel across product and communications.

For client work, ask where the brand actually meets people on an ordinary Tuesday. Those contexts often reveal more useful design rules than a moodboard does: what should feel immediate, reassuring, energetic, or quietly competent?
