Imperial's Rebrand Makes Belonging the Strategic Advantage

Why this matters to Wen: higher-ed identity gets stronger when it helps students feel part of something, not just impressed by it.

Imperial's identity story is useful because it treats university branding as a belonging problem, not only a differentiation problem.

The Story

The Click's work for Imperial College London stands out because it addresses a common weakness in higher-ed branding: too much noise around reputation and not enough emotional clarity around who a student becomes by joining. The project argues that a university identity can be braver without simply becoming louder.

That is strategically important. Many institutions already have prestige cues, polished photography, and the usual messages about excellence. What they often lack is a design system that makes the audience feel seen. Belonging is not soft compared with performance. It is often the thing that makes performance claims feel human enough to matter.

For Wen, this is useful in two directions. At work, it is a reminder that educational brands need more than information architecture and proof. In Studio Wensday, it is also a prompt to ask whether the visual language is only impressive or whether it actually helps the right people imagine themselves inside the world being built.

Review one campaign or page and ask a harder question than whether it looks good: does it make the right reader feel invited into an identity they want to inhabit?
