Design Taste Becomes the Job Again

Why this matters to Wen: when tools can draft almost anything, what stays rare is the ability to decide what is actually worth keeping.

Evidence: Figma’s 2026 designer report positions craft, judgment, and quality as the differentiators that still matter in the AI era.

The Story

Figma’s 2026 report is useful because it refuses the easy drama. The survey shows a profession under pressure, yes, but not one being erased. Designers are adopting AI, moving faster, and still insisting that craft matters. The interesting point is not that AI exists. It is that taste is becoming easier to spot.

The report says 91% of designers believe AI improves their designs, 89% say they work faster, and 80% say collaboration improves. Those are not “the sky is falling” numbers. They are signs of a field trying to absorb a powerful tool without handing over the whole studio. That balance should feel familiar to you.

For Studio Wensday, this is the right kind of pressure. If the baseline output gets easier, your advantage moves upstream into curation, sequencing, visual restraint, and finish. The designer with better taste does not disappear. She becomes more visible.

Studio Wensday Angle

Run a weekly taste drill. Take one carousel, landing-page section, or poster and remake it three ways. Then write down what only your judgment improved: pacing, hierarchy, image choice, typography, or tone. That turns “taste” into a repeatable practice instead of a flattering adjective.
